Living in Las Vegas, one gets accustomed to a certain level of abundance. From ample parking spaces to 24/7 access to debauchery to all-you-can-eat sushi---this city doesn’t shy away from excess! But one thing that is sadly scarce is the number of well-designed, locally-owned coffee shops—the kind where you can just plop down your MacBook, grab a great cup of coffee and feel inspired to learn, meet and mingle.
So imagine our excitement when a new coffee shop—better yet, a new urban coffee bar—opened up in downtown’s Arts District! Makers & Finders is the kind of cool neighborhood coffee joint that other cities like Portland and San Francisco seem to have no shortage of…and we think it’s about time Las Vegas gets a few more of its own!
Makers & Finders is truly a unique and welcome addition to the Las Vegas scene. Catering to hardcore coffee connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike, the café serves incredible coffee from various regions, boasting an impressive seven different methods of preparation- from pour over to moka pots to aeropress. As if that weren't enough, they also offer a delicious menu of “Latin comfort food” for brunch and lunch.
We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with owners Josh Molina and Valeria Varela to get the scoop on the “newest kid on the block” so to speak, before their official grand opening on December 5th.
The moment Josh sat down with us, cortadito in hand, his true passion for coffee was immediately clear. This passion started from a young age, inspired by Josh’s Colombian roots and re-energized during a life-changing month-long journey through South America.
Josh’s career path wasn’t always so grounded (pun intended!) in the coffee business. He started out in the insurance industry, making good money, achieving top sales records in his region…but found himself quite bored and uninspired.
He was always fascinated with the restaurant industry and his natural curiosity led him to try his hand at various fine food establishments around the city. His South American culture and New York City upbringing eventually led him to the idea of opening his own arepas and empanadas restaurant here in Las Vegas.
However, it was that life-changing month-long journey through South America, with friend and now business partner Valeria, which reignited his love for coffee and Latin foods.
Starting with a work-away stint in a small coffee farm in Santa Marta, Colombia and making their way through Equador and Peru, Josh and Valeria fully immersed themselves in the entire coffee-making process—from root to cup. The trip was just the catalyst the duo needed to tirelessly pursue the dream that ultimately became Makers & Finders.
“We chose downtown Las Vegas because we wanted to be a part of the inspiring growth in this community” said Valeria. “We’re very lucky to be downtown, and being in the Arts District makes it that much better!”
So the next time you’re in the downtown Arts District make sure to stop by Makers & Finders, grab a nice cup of coffee (perhaps a variety from Honduras, Josh’s current favorite), try the Latin Hash, arepas AND chorizo sliders, and just kick back and enjoy the laid back coffee-shop vibes!
